Mix it Up.
I have to admit I’ve become quite the mixer since coming to Europe. Now I don’t like fizzy water as much as the next American, but you end up getting quite hooked on it here. I still can’t stand it plain (and it’s the absolute worst when they hand it out during or after races - it burns when you pour it over your head!) but I do enjoy taking some gas aqua and mixing in some 100% orange juice. It’s like homemade Orangina only better. I also enjoy it mixed with apple juice (a German favorite).
Now to the beers - the Radler!

I mean this beverage is also known as the ‘cyclist’ so you know it’s gotta be good for you! After a long hot ride nothing hits the spot like a 60%/40% mixture of German-lager beer and German-style lemonade.
Or my other favorite right now is the Colaweizen. 70% Hefeweizen (another German fixture) mixed with tired and true 30% coca-cola!

Delicious! Now I know what you’re thinking - hey man, we have these drinks in the states and they’re known as shandies and only chicks drink’em. Well, to that I say, …… so what? In Germany I see everybody drink’em so bottoms up.
BONUS - here’s one for the ultimate post workout pick me up. It’s called the Bucky Special after the legendary B. Schafer brought this concoction to the ALZ. Get this - half chocolate milk (think - protein, carbs, recovery) with half cola (caffeine, more sugar) and BOOM! you got yourself one tasty treat.
Remember, always enjoy in moderation.
